Go on any beauty blogger’s Instagram feed or YouTube channel, and you’ll probably see them moisturize their face with oil as part of their skin care/makeup prep routine. I must admit, at first, I wasn’t a fan. If you have naturally oily skin like me, the thought of putting more oil on your face gives you nightmares about the skin issues you thought you’d left behind in high school.
But even if your skin is on the oily side, a good face oil can lock in moisture, which is particularly important during winter, and if you’re regularly exposed to sun and wind. It’s not the same kind of oil that clogs your pores. So if you use the right carrier oil for your skin, it won’t make you break out.

A great way to get even more bang for your buck when it comes to a rehydrating oil is to add some hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) oil. CBD has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties so can help with red, dry and acne-prone skin.
Choose the Elements of Your CBD Face Oil Wisely
Before we get to the recipe, let’s talk ingredients. There are several ways to customize your CBD face oil to fit your skin’s needs, so you should consider all of the various options for each element of the oil:
- Carrier oil: The carrier oil forms the base of your CBD face oil and will make up the bulk of your final product. You’ll want to choose an oil that targets your skin concerns. Some options are:
- Coconut oil, which is a good choice if you have dry skin.
- Caster oil is a great carrier oil if you’ve got acne-prone skin.
- Argon oil not only moisturizes, but also provides sun protection.
- Olive oil locks in moisture and has antioxidant properties.
- CBD oil: There are lots of CBD oils out there. First things first, make sure your CBD oil comes from hemp organically grown in either North America or Europe. Any oil with untraceable origins may be full of pesticides and other harmful ingredients that could wreak havoc on your skin. If you have particularly sensitive skin, choose a pure CBD oil without any added fragrances or essential oils.

- Essential oils: Speaking of essential oils, they’re something you can add to your CBD face oil for their pleasing aromas as well as some health-boosting effects. These health benefits are thanks to their terpenes. Terpenes are oils secreted by a plant’s glands, and are responsible for their smell and taste. They also have wellness benefits of their own and by including them, you can amplify the benefits of your CBD oil.
- Citrus essential oils contain the terpene limonene. Limonene will make your CBD oil smell fresh and fruity, and it will also boost the oil’s antibacterial properties. Limonene also has mood-boosting properties too, so your CBD oil can help put a smile on your face while it nourishes.
- Lavender essential oils feature the terpene linalool. Linalool is a calming terpene, which can help with anxiety or even poor sleep. There’s a reason why so many products formulated to help people calm down and unwind smell like lavender. A CBD face oil with lavender would be a great option if you want to include your CBD face oil in your nighttime skin care routine as you get ready for bed.
- An essential oil with the aroma of pine is full of the terpene pinene. Pinene not only smells fresh, but it’s also been shown to have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and antiviral properties. If you suffer from cold sores, pinene is the terpene to add to your CBD oil.
How to Make Your Rehydrating CBD-Infused Face Oil
- You’ll need a dropper bottle or another kind of small bottle with a regular or spray top. Try to use a glass bottle as this is not only more environmentally friendly than a plastic one is, but it will protect the ingredients better, too. A funnel will also be handy, but isn’t required.
- Take 2.5 oz of your carrier oil and pour it into your bottle.
- Add a few drops of your essential oil. Mix and smell to see if the aroma is strong enough for your liking. Add any extra drops slowly, smelling often. You could go up to as many as 25 drops.
- Next it’s time to add the CBD oil. You can adjust this as needed, but around 1/4 oz is a good amount.
- Mix well and shake before each use.
