Rapid Delivery Cannabis Edibles Hit the Market

Edibles Take Awhile to 'Hit'

Edibles are metabolized by the liver and are known to have a slower release of cannabinoids. It often may take up to two hours for the effects to be felt fully. For this reason, people who are new to edibles are often warned to not take another dose of an edible until they wait for their first dose to set in. The effect of an edible can last anywhere from 4-6 hours and are considered a great method of administration for addressing certain conditions, including insomnia, appetite loss, and other forms of stomach discomfort.

The adult-use market also enjoys edibles, which is evident when looking at the fast pace growth of the edibles marketplace. In Washington state, there was 121% growth in the edibles market last year alone. A recent report projected that the California edibles market may grow to $11 billion by end of 2017. In the same report, there is an indication that millennials are choosing cannabis over alcohol and edibles make up a significant portion of this.

Rapid Onset Edibles are Here

As the adult use market grows, so does the desire for a more rapid onset for edibles. 1906, a Colorado edible company founded by Peter Barsoom, developed a series of edibles that are meant to be felt in fifteen to twenty minutes. The edibles are created using a proprietary lipid microencapuslation process that allows cannabinoids to, “bypass the stomach and get into the small intestine faster. It also allows more of the THC to get into the blood,” according to Peter Barsoom.

Barsoom was inspired to create the edibles so, “people don’t have six hours to set aside for a date with an edible”. Each edible comes in the form of a chocolate bite, and is formulated to achieve a certain effect, be that sleep, relaxation, or energy. All of the edibles are also said to contain a “mild dosage” with 5mg of THC and 5mg of CBD per bite-sized piece of chocolate.

A Niche Market will Grow

The 1:1 ratio of CBD to THC in the 1906 edibles and the rapid onset of the effects allows them to be easily microdosed or be taken one at a time building upon each other to reach the proper dose. 1906’s rapid release edibles mark a new point in the world of cannabis. Currently, 1906 is the only company on the market producing rapid released edibles, but it is a niche that more companies will presumably soon break in to.

As many people have been moving away from smoking flower, edibles have become increasingly more desirable. Rapid release edibles allow for a more alcohol-like experience for recreational consumers and a quicker release of medication for medicinal consumers. Companies are quickly innovating with their cannabis products to fill the ever growing niches in one of the fastest growing industries in the country.
